Treating Club Foot (CTEV)

CTEV stands for Congenital Talipes Equinovarus Varus. It is commonly known as Clubfoot which is one of the most common congenital musculoskeletal deformities among newborns.

It can be inflexible deformity, which is present at birth. There is frequently an extra equinus at the midfoot level called cavus, as well as calf musculature underdevelopment.

There are two types of CTEV:

  • 1. Postural CTEV : The deformity of the feet in which Muscle imbalance and/or stiffness in the muscles cause a malformation of the feet.
  • 2. Structural CTEV : The deformity that is related to the bones and joints in the foot, where the child's foot cannot have a full range of motion.
  • Common symptoms of CTEV to check for:
  • Feet turning inwards
  • Tightness in calf muscles
  • Decreased range of movement in the joints of the foot
  • Before treatment, Dr Samuel Lenald will conduct orthopedic assessments to determine the type of CTEV that your child has. Although postural CTEV normally resolves on its own, physiotherapy intervention for stretching and stimulation of the foot may be required in certain situations.

Serial casting and manipulation with minimum surgery may be required to treat the club foot. Surgery may be required in extreme situations.

Until your child turns four, he or she may need to wear special boots with a bar to maintain his or her foot in the proper position.

Some of the other techniques used by Dr Samuel Lenald are Ponseti’s technique, Rhythmic and repeated gentle manipulation, Gentle stretching, Strapping, and Plaster of Paris (POP).

Dr. Samuel Lenald is a specialist orthopedic surgeon in the town who is known for treating these kinds of deformities.
